The Pattersons were represented by at least five grandsons of John and Peggy Patterson (J&P) within the 14th Texas Cavalry. J&P's son Robert had married Ann M. Johnson (his second wife) in 1835, in Franklin Co., Ga. By 1838, they were living in AL, as were many of the Johnson family. By the late 1840s and early 1850s, the Johnsons and the Pattersons were in East Texas, the latter in Rusk Co.
Ann Johnson Patterson was the sister of Middleton Tate Johnson. MT Johnson later became known as Col. Johnson. He raised five separate cavalry regiments (14th - 18th Texas Cavalry regiments), known as Johnson's Brigade (Johnson's 1st - 5th regiments). The 14th Regiment was quickly "dismounted" and served as Infantry, but retained the title of 14th Texas Cavalry. For more information on the 14th, see the description on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System.
Some of the members of the 14th were as follows:
The 14th Tx Cavalry was heavily engaged during the war. They were first organized in the summer of 1861. Mustered into Confederate service at Dallas in Sept. 1861. Dismounted at Little Rock, Arkansas in March or April 1862. Reorganized in May 1862. Surrendered by Lieutenant General Richard Taylor, commanding the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana, at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4th 1865.
