How I Got Started In Stokes
My name is Charles Wesley Patterson,
Sr., also known as, "The TREESHAKER."
I began to research families from Stokes County, NC around 1991. I never
knew that it would turn into the life-long project that it has! Stokes
County has had a rich heritage over the years, and there is a
wealth of information available if one wants to research genealogy in
this county. My son, Charles Wesley Patterson, Jr., descends
from all of the Stokes Families that I am currently featuring, through
his mother's lines. I began to work on this page in May of 1997.

Since I began researching the families
of Stokes county, I have been privileged to meet many interesting
people, and to learn a great deal of history and genealogy about the
families of Stokes county, and many other places. The bulk of my research
work has involved the Stokes county families, so I have a lot of information
that I am still trying to get organized and on the web. The following
are the families that I have extensive information on. The links take
you to a Descendants Report.
However, some very interesting data
regarding the Parmer/Palmer family has started coming in to me in
late 2002 and early 2003. It is being uncovered that the Palmers were
of partial (or possibly full) Native American descent. The progenitor
of the Stokes Co NC Palmers was Elias Palmer. It appears that he was
either full or partial Native American, and his wife Nancy Hoskins
seems to have been also. I am currently doing a lot of research and
networking with other researchers on this to uncover as many facts
as possible about them. The Palmers came from Halifax Co VA about
1811-1815 to Stokes Co NC.

Projects
Although I have located
4 or 5 cemeteries back in the woods in Stokes county
belonging to the families I'm researching, I am currently
focusing on one particular cemetery near Francisco,
NC, off of Horseshoe Road and the Big Creek.
The cemetery holds about 40 or 41 graves that I have
found to date, belonging to the families of Riddle-Dollarhite-Palmer-Durham.
