Robert
"R" and Sarah Patterson's Children:
This
Page Was Last Updated On July 22, 2003.
Thomas
Patterson was the oldest son of Robert and Sarah Patterson.
Thomas and Sarah were apparently the oldest son and daughter
of Robert when Robert wrote his will in 1775 in York Co
SC. Thomas's son John Patterson was named in that same
document. For more information about the 1775 Will of
Robert "R" Patterson go to http://wespatterson.com/patt/patt_reksten.html.
Thomas
Patterson was most likely born by 1745 at the latest,
based largely in part on the fact that his oldest son
John Patterson was born about 1765 (fairly accurate date).
Also, Thomas appears to have been involved in some degree
in the French and
Indian War, along with other individuals in Augusta
Co Va who later moved to York Co SC, such as Nathaniel
Harrison, Robert Patterson, the Blacks, Cravens, and others.
They were recorded in 1758 for service they provided in
1756. I'm inclined to believe that Thomas was born closer
to 1740 than 1745. Another good reason for stating that
is the 1744 Will
of Margaret Adams. Margaret was Thomas's grandmother
(Margaret Donnell Patterson Adams). She recorded in her
1744 will that her son Robert Patterson had a daughter
named Mary Patterson, and that he had "children".
Yes, there could have been another child born prior to
Thomas and that died later, but we have no record of this,
and it seems very likely that Thomas must have been born
closer to 1740 in order to be "involved" in
the War in 1756.
Many
details of Thomas Patterson's life are covered in my Biographical
Sketch of Robert "R" Patterson, so I will not
repeat all of them here. I encourage you to read that
sketch, especially if you want to learn more about Thomas.
Thomas
appears to have moved to the Clark's Fork of Bullocks
Creek area that is now in York Co SC sometime in the 1760's.
By the early 1780's he MAY have been living in the Dorchester,
SC region. That area was a "safe haven" for
Loyalists aka Tories
aka British sympathizers during the Revolutionary War.
There was also a British Fort in Dorchester. It is a known
fact that some of the Ponders of York Co SC moved there,
and Daniel Ponder Sr. apparently died there. Daniel Ponder
"Junior" was a brother-in-law of Thomas Patterson.
Some of the Black family and some of the Julians, as well
as some of the Ponders,
were in Dorchester also during the 1780's and 1790's.
There
was a Thomas Patterson recorded on the 1790 census there,
and I believe this was the same Thomas Patterson. He was
listed as 2-3-2-0-6 and this record may be viewed online
at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/census/1790/transcriptions/035.gif.
This means that Thomas had one male 16+ living with him,
3 males under 16, and 2 females, plus 6 slaves. His oldest
son John was already married by 1790 to Margaret Black,
and they were recorded in the 1790 Pendleton District
SC census. Based on my interpretation of these records,
along with the 1800 census that shows a Thomas Patterson
in Buncombe Co NC relatively next to John and Margaret
Black Patterson, I believe that Thomas had at least 5
sons and 1 daughter.
It
seems that based on the 1800 and 1810 Buncombe Co NC census,
and the 1820 Haywood Co NC census, one of the other sons
of Thomas may have been a Robert Patterson. Another son
MAY have been a James Patterson, but that is not as sure
as the Robert, so don't quote me on that! Son John Patterson
was involved in a deed in Buncombe Co NC in the early
1800's with an Andrew Patterson. Was this another son
of Thomas? I don't know, but it's a consideration. The
only child listed in Thomas's household in 1800 was his
daughter. His wife was still living then, too.
Based
on early Buncombe deeds, Thomas
appears to have been alive in 1807, but was not present
in the 1810 census. There was an older female living in
his son John's household in 1810, that may have been Thomas's
widow. Therefore, the years 1807-1810 are the approximate
time frame for the death of Thomas Patterson.
The
details of the children of Thomas Patterson have been
pieced together to the best of my knowledge, but many
details are still uncovered. Most likely, ALL of his children
were born BEFORE 1780. The following is a brief sketch
of what is currently known about the children of Thomas:
- John
Patterson (b. ca. 1765; d. 1840-50), m. Margaret
Black
- Robert
Patterson (b.1766-1772; d.after 1820)
- son3 (possibly James)
(b. 1774-80; d.after 1790)
- son4
(b. 1774-80; d.after 1790)
- son5
(b. 1775-84; d.after 1790)
- Sarah (b. ca. 1784-86; d. after 1850), m. Joseph Black (brother of Reuben Black)
