Robert & Elizabeth _____ PATTERSON

Was this Robert Patterson of Buncombe Co., NC (1800-1810) and Haywood Co., NC (1820) the Robert Patterson referred to in this email? Were Robert and John (1765) brothers? I believe so.

Wes,
These are some notes I have in my Genealogy program. They would have come from a printed copy of the ordinary court records. I don't have all my research with me right now so I can't tell you an author or publisher but I thought it might be relevant to the Pattersons you had in Rabun Co. Do you know who the Robert Patterson is? If you're interested I can give you more details on the source later. Maybe you can give me information, though.

Ordinary Court Records, Rabun Co., GA, 1822-1850
Book A pgs. 3, 22, 23
Book B pg. 15

November term 1822
page 3 ". . . [jurats] order Joseph Patterson to sell Lot 7, District 2 as property of _____ Patterson, deceased, for the benefit of heirs and creditors."

May term 1830
page 22 "Letters of Administation[sic] granted to Joseph Patterson on Estate of Robert Patterson, deceased."
continued page 23
inventory of personal property of Robert Patterson "Final entry of property is Real Property which is lot 7 in 2nd District. . . Sworn to on 29 June 1830 /s/John Patterson."

It used to be unclear (to me) whether or not the Robert Patterson who died in Rabun Co GA between 1820 and 1822 was the brother of John & Margaret Black Patterson or their son, in fact. J&M's son Robert was born 1796, we now know. John's brother Robert was born ca. 1766-1772. However, the Robert Patterson (b. 1796) who was in Rusk Co TX by 1853 appears to have been the son of J&M, thus excluding him from being a candidate for this Rabun Co deceased Patterson.

I also believe that the Joseph Patterson and John Patterson mentioned in the above records to have been the sons of John Patterson, and therefore nephews of the deceased Robert. We know that in 1830 the Rabun Co GA census lists Joseph, John, and George Patterson, all proven sons of John and Margaret Patterson.

As to the identity of the children of this Robert (1766/72) It is very possible that the younger of the 3 James Pattersons in Haywood in 1820 could have been one of the sons of this Robert Patterson. This Robert had 3 sons and 5 daughters, at least, based on the combined census records of 1800, 1810, and 1820.

I do not think this Robert was the father of the Robert Patterson of Big Ivy, NC who married Catherine. Nor do I think the younger Robert Patterson of Big Ivy, NC (1830 and 1840) who married Leah Roberts, was the son of either of these older Robert Pattersons. The younger Robert who married Leah Roberts was born in 1809. That was too young for any of the sons of Robert (1766/72) and it was too old to be a son of the Robert who married Catherine. They were married in 1810, and were in the 1810 census, with no children.

So, I am still clueless as to the identity of the children of Robert (1766/72), brother of John.

At this time, I firmly believe that the elder Robert Patterson (b. 1766/72) who was the brother of John, died in Rabun Co GA ca. 1820-22. We do know that his wife was named Elizabeth, based on the church minutes from Newfound Baptist Church in Buncombe Co NC, near Leicester.
