John and Margaret Black Patterson's Children:

This Page Was Last Updated On August 19, 2005.

I believe the oldest daughter of John and Margaret Patterson to have been named Elizabeth. I cannot prove it conclusively yet, but I feel extremely confident in this. Here is why I believe this to be true.

John and Margaret had four daughters that we know, based on the 1800 census (three b. 1790-1800) and the 1810 census (fourth daughter born after 1800). We know that Ann (or Anna) was the youngest of the four, born in October 1802, and that she never married. However, of the other three older daughters, only Amey Jane (b. 1793) has been well-documented over the years. It appears that the other two daughters were born ca. 1790/91 and 1794/95. At this time I believe the third daughter (b. 1794/95) most likely died between 1800 and 1810. If she was born AFTER Amey, she most likely would have been too young to marry by 1810, and she was not recorded in John's household (HH) that year.

On the other hand, the oldest daughter was most definitely old enough to have married by 1810. It is my belief that this daughter was named Elizabeth, and that she married James MORROW b/w 1808/10.

Consider the contact that various Morrows had with the Pattersons and other known Patterson neighbors in the early years in Buncombe. When John Patterson bought his 100 acres from Richard Morrow on 8/02/1802 in Buncombe Co NC, this was witnessed by Daniel Ponder, James Morrow, and Andrew Patterson. Daniel Ponder was John's uncle. I believe Andrew Patterson was either a younger brother of John, OR more likely, was a 1st cousin of John (brother of the James Patterson who married Sarah Morrow). James Morrow was born ca. 1780, so he would have been about 22 years old at this time.

In 1806, John Plemons bought his 100 acres from Thomas Harrison, which put him next to John Patterson. The witnesses for this deed were John Patterson and Clem Davis. This tract was bordered by Richard Morrow. Again, Richard Morrow was the one who had sold some of his land to John Patterson in 1802.

By 1810 there were deeds involving other Morrows (other than Richard), i.e. James Morrow, John Morrow, Joseph M. Morrow, Robert Morrow, to name a few. Specifically, James Morrow bought 80 acres from Humphrey Williams on both sides of Newfound Creek on 6/16/1810. This was next to David Rogers and Joseph Sorrell. The witnesses were Jonathan Hicks and Robert Morrow. The interesting thing here is the name Jonathan Hicks. More research needs to be done to see if he was related to David Hicks, or not. David Hicks was the father of Sallie Hicks, who married John Patterson, Jr (son of John and Margaret).

Then, on 8/31/1811, James Morrow bought 100 acres from Thomas Plemmons, also known to live very close to John Patterson. This was on Newfound Creek and bordered Johnny Williams. This was witnessed by Jonathan Hicks and Joseph M. Morrow.

On 2/22/1816, James Morrow sold 60 acres to David Cole. James was described as "of Haywood Co NC" in that deed. This land was on both sides of Newfound Creek on Rogers' line. The witnesses were James Gudger and Joseph Cole. This deed tells us that James Morrow was gone to Haywood Co NC by 1816. We also know that John and Margaret Patterson began selling their Buncombe land in 1815. Furthermore, John and Margaret Patterson were mentioned in the Newfound Baptist Church minutes in Buncombe in 1815 for the last time. They may still have been in Buncombe as late as 1819, but I'm not sure. I'm beginning to think they had already moved to Haywood, but still owned land in Buncombe. However, in 1820 when John sold the last of his Buncombe land he was in Haywood then, according to the deed, as well as the census. It appears to me that they were all heading to Haywood (near Waynesville) circa 1815.

James and Elizabeth Morrow have yet to be found in 1820, but may have been either in Haywood Co NC or Rabun Co GA, probably the latter. John and Margaret's son Robert Patterson was most likely in Rabun Co GA in 1820, as well, and there was a James Morrow there in 1825, so it is very likely that's where they were in 1820. The 1820 Rabun census has been lost, unfortunately.

Karen Robertson lists the following deed extraction on her web site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jcbarron/barron/deeds.htm:

22 March 1825; Rabun Co. GA. James Barron of Pendleton District SC to Gabriel Barron of Rabun Co. GA, for $600[?], tract of land in 5th District, lot number 37, containing 490 acres. Signed James Barron. Wit: Solomon Beck, James Morrow. Rec. 18 June 1825. [Rabun Co. GA Deed Book A, p 91].

This shows that James was in Rabun, and we know that others from the Patterson family were in Rabun during the 1820's and early 1830's. John and Margaret's son Joseph was named on court records of Rabun in 1822 and 1830. The Robert Patterson who was deceased by 1822 was most likely the brother of John Patterson. Notice the following:

Ordinary Court Records, Rabun Co., GA, 1822-1850

Book B pg. 15

The 1830 Rabun Co GA census records three sons of John and Margaret, to wit, Joseph Patterson, John Patterson (Jr), and George Patterson (my ancestor). We still don't know where John and Margaret were in 1830, nor their daughter Amey Jane and her husband William D. Kincaid. Likewise, John and Margaret's sons Amos and Robert, and daughter Ann are still "missing" in 1830.

However, James Morrow and Elizabeth were in Macon Co NC in 1830. Their family was recorded as (3211001-002101). This would make 1780 as the common year (across the various census records) for his approximate birth year. Altogether, James and Elizabeth Morrow had 7 sons and 3 daughters. This 1830 census is the most defining census for them in regards to their family profile. Other relatives from the BLACK side of the family (Margaret's side) were in Macon Co NC in 1830, such as George BLACK, among others.

By 1840, the James Morrow family was in Union Co GA, with James Morrow as the head of HH. He died in the 1840's apparently. James was living two HH's away from John and Margaret Patterson. His HH was recorded as (003200001-0000201). Again, James was apparently born ca. 1780, and Elizabeth ca. 1790.

This family was still in Union Co GA in 1850, which is where we finally learn Elizabeth's name. She was listed in HH # 406. She was age 60 (b. 1790), and SC was listed as her birthplace. She had a daughter Mary (26 NC), and sons John (25 NC), Howard (21 NC), and William (19 NC) living with her. These birthplaces indicate that they were living in NC throughout the 1820's. That is most likely true. Many of these border families moved back and forth across the state lines. It could be they lived in NC the whole time but that they went over into GA from time to time since other family members were living there. Several possibilities come to mind, actually.

The evidence shows this family staying extremely close to John and Margaret Patterson over the years. Given the fact that James Morrow was apparently living very near (if not next to) the Pattersons in Buncombe NC at the time their oldest daughter would have gotten married, lends further support to the theory that Elizabeth _____ Morrow was indeed Elizabeth Patterson Morrow, oldest daughter of John and Margaret Black Patterson, and second oldest child of John and Margaret.

William "Bill" Morrow has put together an excellent web site for the Morrow Family DNA project as well as their genealogy database. These are excellent resources to refer to.
