Amos Patterson's Children:
This Page Was Last Updated On September 29, 2005.
Wilson Lumpkin Patterson was the oldest child of Amos Patterson and Elizabeth Wilson. Lumpkin, as he was known, was born between 1830 and 1833 in GA, most likely in the Indian Lands of Hall or Union Co GA. Lumpkin was recorded in many different ways over the years, such as William, William L., Wilson, Wilson L., or Lumpkin. There is some question as to whether or not he's the oldest son. It depends on which census record you go by. At this time I'm not 100% certain, however, the 1860 census clearly lists him as older than his brother John J. Patterson. Then again, that could have been an erroneous recording. As for whether his name was William or Wilson, I am convinced his name was Wilson Lumpkin Patterson. Most official records have Wilson instead of William. Furthermore, when Lumpkin was born in GA, the Governor of Georgia was Wilson Lumpkin. See his biography for more information on Governor Wilson Lumpkin.
Lumpkin was living with his parents in Union Co GA in 1834 and 1840. They were together again in Gilmer Co GA in 1850, and again in 1860 in Rusk Co TX. However, by 1860 Lumpkin had already been married and widowed. He married his first wife Mary "Elizabeth" Davis on October 07, 1855 in Rusk Co TX. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Gurley Davis and Matilda Caroline Jowell (Davis). The Jowells (Joels) had arrived in Rusk County prior to 1850. Matilda Jowell Davis's niece was Mary Frances Jowell who later married Lumpkin's first cousin, Silas Kimsey Patterson. That means that Lumpkin and Kimsey Patterson (first cousins) married first cousins also, i.e. Elizabeth Davis and Mary Jowell.
Lumpkin and Elizabeth were pregnant right away. However, their child died either soon after birth or during birth. This child died on March 03, 1856. Elizabeth Davis Patterson died four weeks later on March 31, 1856.
In 1861, Wilson L. Patterson enlisted in the Civil War under Johnson's Brigade, the 14th TX Cavalry. Colonel Middleton Tate Johnson was the brother-in-law of Robert Patterson, Lumpkin's uncle. Lumpkin enlisted in the 14th as a 2nd Lieutenant. Also enlisted in this regiment was Lumpkin's brother, John J. Patterson, plus at least three of their cousins, Mid Patterson, Robert L. Patterson, and Berry Patterson. There was a sixth Patterson in the regiment named Thomas T. or J. Patterson, relation unknown. The 14th TX Cavalry was enlisted from 1861 until May 4, 1865. For more about these Pattersons in the 14th TX Cavalry I suggest you do some research on the Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System web site at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html. Once there, search in Soldiers, then search for last name Patterson, select Confederate, select Texas as the state, and then type in "14" as the Unit No., then select Cavalry as the Function, and then click the Submit Query button.
Lumpkin married again in the late 1860's, no later than 1869. This second wife was named Martha. The 1870 census lists her as 25 years old (b. ca. 1845 in AL). It also shows that Lumpkin and Martha had twins - a son and a daughter. They were born in May, 1870 and were named Eoga (sic) Patterson (female) and Eugene Patterson (male). This 1870 census is key as it confirms that Lumpkin's first name was sometimes written as Wilson. Click on the small image to the right to see a large version of the entire census page on which they were recorded. Click here to see a smaller subset of the same page, which only shows Wilson Patterson's household, followed by Silas Kimsey Patterson's household, followed by Jeremiah Davis' household. These two families living in such proximity to Wilson confirm that he is indeed Wilson Lumpkin Patterson.
The next record we have of Lumpkin is the 1880 census. He was living in Panola Co TX by then, just to the east of Rusk Co. His twins from 1870 appear to have died by 1880 as they were not in the household. Neither was his second wife Martha. Lumpkin's third wife was named Mary F. ______. She was born ca. 1842 in TN according to the census. Lumpkin had another son named Robert Patterson, born ca. 1876. If Mary was the mother of Robert, then she and Lumpkin must have married no later than 1875, which would also indicate that his second wife Martha had died no later than 1875. Further research in June, 2005 has revealed that Lumpkin's third wife was Mary Frances Neil, daughter of Patrick Neil and Elizabeth "Eliza" C. West. Mary was born in 1844 in TN. Lumpkin and Mary were married on October 10, 1871 in TX, either Rusk or Panola county, I assume.
They had one son (as far as I know) whose full name was Robert Webb Patterson. I have found scattered pieces of information, but taken together, the family apparently moved to Hale Co, TX which is in the NW part of TX. Mary supposedly died in Hale County in 1907. I have not been able to confirm that. I have found nothing (so far) of Lumpkin in the Hale Co Tx records, but there's plenty more to search. But I DID find their son Robert Webb Patterson. He is buried in the Hale Center Cemetery in Hale Center, Tx (Hale County). He died on March 03, 1950. His burial record says he was born August 09, 1875. Again I assume that to have been in either Rusk or Panola Co. There are other, younger Pattersons buried in that same cemetery. Furthermore, Mary had been married to John Hines Reed, II prior to her marriage to Lumpkin. Her son by her first marriage, John Hines Reed, III, is also buried in this same cemetery in Hale Center, TX. This is indeed Robert Webb Patterson, son of Wilson Lumpkin Patterson and Mary Frances Neil.
The last known record of Wilson Lumpkin Patterson was on May 5, 1883 when he and his brother John J. Patterson, and others, were grantors selling their Rusk Co TX land. I assume Lumpkin was still living in Panola Co at the time. However, this knew evidence indicates that he moved to west Texas in the late 1800's. His brother John J. was in Montague Co TX by 1880, along with their sister Nancy Agnes Ann Patterson, who never married. If anyone has any more information about Lumpkin, please share it with me. Thank you.
