John and Margaret Black Patterson's Children:
This Page Was Last Updated On June 15, 2005.
Amos Patterson
was born between 1803 and 1804 in Buncombe Co., NC. He was most likely the last
child of John and Margaret "Peggy" Black Patterson. Amos married Elizabeth Wilson on
September 21, 1829 in Hall Co., Ga. Elizabeth was born ca. 1801 in SC. Some
have listed Amos as being born ca. 1801, including me at one time. However, considering
all census records, including the 1860 Rusk Co Tx census, it appears that Amos
was actually the youngest child of John and Peggy, thus making his birth year
more around 1803 or 1804. Also, I have in the past listed his wife like many others as Elizabeth
Parmoline Wilson, but I have never seen an "official" document stating
that as her middle name. Considering the fact that Amos married again in 1858
to Parmelia A. Morris, I suspect that someone may have been mistaking the latter
name as a middle name for his 1st wife. I am confident, however, that Amos' first wife was Elizabeth Wilson, and that his second wife was Parmelia A. Morris.
Some folks have
listed Amos and Elizabeth's oldest child as Silas Kimsey Patterson, who was
born in 1828-1829 in Rabun Co., Ga. I have gone into detail on George Patterson's
page regarding why I believe that Silas Kimsey (SK) Patterson was the son of
George and Rebecca Chastain Patterson. Here is a list of Amos and Elizabeth's
children as I have them:
- Wilson Lumpkin
Patterson; b. 1830-33 (GA); d. after 1883
- John Joseph
Patterson; b. 1831-34 (GA); d. 1910-12 (NM or OK)
- Mary Margaret
Patterson; b. ca. 1835 (GA); d. after 1860
- Martha N. Patterson;
b. 1837 (GA); d. after 1850
- Nancy Agnes Ann Patterson;
b. 1839 (GA); d. after 1900
Descendants Report in PDF format.
In 1834 (Union
Co., Ga) there were five males living in Amos's household. As of August, 2002,
I believe that four of the males were Amos, his two sons William Lumpkin and
John Joseph, and then Amos's father, John. I'm not sure who the fifth male was.
He could have been another son who died young that we know nothing of, or he
could have been another relative, even from the Wilson side of the family. My strongest leaning is that the fifth male was Amos's nephew John Patterson, son of Amos's brother Robert. In 1840, this grandchild of John and Peggy was living with them, and not Amos.
Also in 1834, there
were two females, whom I believe to have been Amos's wife and mother, Elizabeth
Wilson Patterson and Margaret "Peggy" Black Patterson, respectively. John and Peggy
have never been found on any of the 1834 north Georgia census records, so it
is a distinct possibility that they were living with Amos, but in no way has
this been proven. Given the fact that Amos and his parents both have not yet
been found on the 1830 census as well, I tend to believe at this point in time
that John and Peggy were living or traveling with Amos and his family during those
years. They were probably together in 1830 and again in 1834, in Union Co.,
Ga. Amos was in Union Co., Ga in 1840, and in Gilmer Co., Ga in 1850. He
was in Rusk Co., Tx in 1860. A link to the 1860 Rusk Co Tx census is ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/tx/rusk/census/1860/pg0297b.txt - page 304A.
The 1860 census
for Amos lists his family as follows:
Rusk Co Texas,
Reel# M653-1304, page 304A

I previously thought
that Amos's son Lumpkin had died by 1830, but this 1860 census shows he was
one and the same as the son William L. Patterson. It's just that he, along with
at least two of his sisters, went by their middle name. Also living with Amos and his second wife Parmelia were Parmelia's two daughters by her first husband. They were Eliza and Martha Morris. Also, I previously thought Amos had four daughters. However, the census records of TX from 1860 - 1900 help clear up that all records regarding Nancy, Agnes, and Ann are all referring to the same person. She was Nancy Agnes Ann Patterson, born 1839, and she never married. She went by "Ann".
There were some
land grants in Rusk Co., Texas issued to Robert Patterson (two land grants),
Amos Patterson, and SK Patterson. I am now certain that this Robert was the older brother of Amos. The SK Patterson was Amos's nephew Silas Kimsey Patterson, son of George Patterson. The following records are from the Rusk
County, Tx Deeds office:
- Book H/Pg 23
- Irvin Lawson to Robert Patterson, land lying next
to and adjoining Patterson's survey. No acreage specified. Filed
12-31-1852.
- H/532 - B. C.
H. Johnson to Amos Patterson, a tract of land 25 mi.
s.e. of Henderson (now known as Caledonia Community), 215 acres,
filed 12-26-1853.
- I/293 - Wm.
Winn to Robert Patterson, 640 acres (all of Winn's Headright
Survey), filed 10-05-1854.
- N/8 - Mary Ann
Thomas and J. Elliott sold to Robert Patterson 160 acres
in the George Saddler Survey, filed 9-29-1856.
- 27/476 - T.
M. Attaway to SK Patterson, 30 mi. s. of Henderson in
the Henry Hilton Survey, 19.1 acres, filed 2-05-1889.
Also, the Texas
General Land Office (GLO) had two more land patents, each 160 acres in Rusk
County, one for Amos Patterson and the other for SK Patterson.
SK's was filed on 8-27-1859 (Patent # 292, Vol. 4), while Amos's was filed
on 8-29-1859 (Patent # 293, Vol. 4). The deeds do not show any more information
that might shed light on family relations.
According to the 1860 Rusk Co., Tx census,
Robert Patterson was born circa 1796 in Alabama. It looks like most of his children
were born in Ga, though. This may have been a transcription error, though. It has been determined that there are numerous birth location errors on the Rusk Co Tx census. Robert was actually born in NC. Furthermore, his oldest daughter (by this second wife of his) was born in GA, and their four sons thereafter were born in AL.
In 1860 the Rusk
Co., Tx census lists an SK Patterson, age 32 from Ga. Then again in 1870, he's
there in Rusk Co. listed as Silas Patterson, age 41 born in Ga. Then in 1880,
once again in Rusk Co., it lists him as SK Patterson, age 51, born in Ga. Silas
Kimsey Patterson married Mary Frances Jowell (Joel) in Rusk Co., Tx on December
13, 1855, according to the Rusk county marriages. Mary's ancestors were
from TN and SC before that. One other note about SK and Mary Jowell Patterson
of Rusk Co., Tx; their oldest daughter was named Rebecca Elizabeth Patterson.
Those two names were the names of her two grandmothers. Mary Frances Jowell
Patterson's mother was named Elizabeth Jowell, while S.K.'s mother was Rebecca
Chastain Patterson. This is one more reason why I believe that SK was the son
of George and Rebecca Chastain Patterson, instead of Amos.
In December of 2001, a man named Frank Patterson contacted me after viewing
a query I left on GenForum regarding SK Patterson. Frank informed me that SK
was his great-grandfather! We continued sharing information. Since SK had been
about 42 years old when his son Sexton Frank Patterson was born, and then Sexton
Frank was about 33 when his only son Herschel William was born, and then he
was 43 when his only son (the Frank who contacted me) was born in 1946, Frank
did not have much to go on regarding SK's ancestors. So I sent Frank some reports
on the Pattersons and the Chastains since I believed that George & Rebecca
Chastain Patterson were SK's parents. Frank subsequently informed me that he
remembered his father telling him about the Chastain family as being their ancestors
somehow, and that one of the original Chastains (Renee Chastain) had been sent
back to France to get the family fortune, only to never be heard from again.
Although I hadn't heard that story before, that doesn't sound unreasonable considering
that the Chastains were French Huguenots and had fled France because of religious
persecution. I will point out that Renee Chastain was definitely a common name
passed down throughout the generations of this family. Our actual immigrant
ancestor was Pierre Chastain. More on the Chastains can be found on the web
site of the Pierre Chastain
Family Association.
Frank Patterson
(g-grandson of SK) lives in the Houston, Tx area and has confirmed several "educated
guesses" for us. Frank's grandfather, Sexton Frank Patterson was a religious
man, was musically gifted (classical piano, organ, violin), and was a real estate
agent and investor. Sexton's son Herschel William Patterson (Frank's father)
was a school teacher, and later a law enforcement officer, serving as a constable,
Justice of the Peace, a railroad officer with the Texas and Pacific Railway,
an INS agent with the Border Patrol, and a special officer attached to the Texas
Rangers. Most of this was in the Big Bend area of Texas on the border with Mexico.
He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II at the age of 38. While he
was in the service he met Frank's mother, Wilner Wright, and married her in
1945. Thank you, Frank for sharing this information with us regarding your family,
i.e. SK and his descendants.
But SK wasn't the
only Patterson from Ga. getting married there. Amos's son John Joseph Patterson
was there in Rusk Co., Tx when he married Sarah A. Holmes on Nov. 15, 1866.
It listed him as "Jno. J. Patterson". He was recorded in Montague
Co., Tx in 1880 as J. J. Patterson, age 49 and born in Ga. His wife had died
by then, but his oldest child was R. E. Patterson (female) age 11 in 1880.
In J.J.'s 1880
household his sister was also recorded there. It listed her as A. Ann Patterson,
age 41, born in Ga. I believe this was Agnes Ann. Interesting thing here is
that J.J. and Ann had one aunt named Agnes (Nancy Agnes Wilson) and another
aunt named Ann (Ann Patterson). Also, the census lists that the parents of J.J.
and Ann were born in NC and SC. That also matches the birthplaces for Amos and
Elizabeth, respectively.
In November of 2004, Margaret Wickes contacted me. Margaret is a direct descendant of Amos Patterson, through his son John Joseph (J.J.) Patterson. Margaret has been gracious enough to fill in many details regarding J.J.'s line of the family. Margaret is the first descendant of Amos Patterson that has made contact with me.
Margaret states that J.J.'s three children were named R. Elizabeth Patterson (White), Amos Holmes Patterson, and N. Caroline Patterson. They were all living in Montague Co Tx in 1880 and were still there in 1900. J.J. was a land agent for Hesikial Land Co. The family moved to Estancia, New Mexico in late 1905 or early 1906. Amos H. Patterson was married in Montague Co Tx on 8-22-1905 to Fanny Mae Roberts, but his first child was born in Estancia, NM in June 1906.
We still don't know exactly when John Joseph Patterson died, but it was between 1906 and 1921 for certain. He died in NM. His wife, Sally Holmes Patterson, died in February 1874, in Rusk Co Tx.
Amos H. Patterson was very talented musically, and also served in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Margaret also pointed out that J.J. served in the Civil War according to their family records. Amos H. lived until 8-11-1928, when he died in Belen, NM. His widow, Fanny Mae, died 12-22-1967 in Albuquerque, NM. They had 12 children, 10 of which lived to adulthood.
Another child of Amos appears to have been there in Rusk Co., Tx. W. L. Patterson
(William Lumpkin) married Mary E. Davis in Rusk Co. on Oct. 7, 1855. This Mary
E. Davis was a first cousin to Mary F. Jowell who married SK Patterson. Lumpkin
was in Rusk county in 1860 and in 1870. He was in Panola Co.,
Tx in 1880, which is one county to the east of Rusk. William's (Lumpkin's) first
wife Mary E. Davis died in 1856. His infant child died that year also. He married again before 1870 to a Martha _____, and they had twins which were born in May, 1870. Apparently this second wife and both children had died by the mid 1870's, as Lumpkin had
remarried. In 1880, he was listed as William Patterson, age 47, born in Ga, father
born in NC and mother born in SC, all of which is correct.
It seems there
needs to be comprehensive research done on the Rusk county deeds and marriage
records during the 1850s and 1860s. But with Amos "arriving" in Rusk
county around 1852 or so, I can only wonder what happened to him after that.
He appears to have been dead by 1880, but I am not sure about 1870. Amos, Lumpkin and John J. were all found in the 1860 Rusk
Co Tx census. Amos appears to have died sometime after 1860, but before 1880. That's as close as I can get it for now. Did he have more children by his second wife? I don't know.
It has recently (May 2005) come to my attention that Amos' son Lumpkin was recorded in various ways over the years, including William, William L., Wilson, Wilson L., or Lumpkin. He was recorded in Rusk Co Tx in 1870 as Wilson Patterson, living next to Silas Patterson. Furthermore, during the Civil War, the 14th TX Cavalry was Colonel M. T. Johnson's 1st Regiment. Within that regiment there were six Pattersons. One of the officers was Wilson L. Patterson. One of the privates was John J. Patterson. Both of these were sons of Amos. Three of the other Pattersons in that same unit were their first cousins, sons of Robert Patterson, i.e. Mid Patterson, Robert L. Patterson, and Berry Patterson. Colonel Johnson was the uncle of these latter three, as he was the brother of Robert Patterson's wife, Ann Johnson (Patterson). There was also a Thomas T. Patterson in this same unit, but I don't know of any relation. There may have been, but I don't know what it was at this time.
