Robert
"R" and Sarah Patterson's Children:
This
Page Was Last Updated On July 22, 2003.
Sarah
Patterson appears to have been the oldest daughter of
Robert Patterson in 1775 when he wrote his
will. For many years, we all assumed that the reference
in Robert's will to a "Joseph" was indeed to
the Joseph Patterson who is mentioned in many York Co
SC deeds. However, Harald Reksten's research trip to the
SC Archives in July of 2002 very accurately discovered
the many signatures on the jacket of that 1775 Will, including
Joseph Black, John Black, Daniel Ponder (Jr), Robert Patterson
(Jr), Peter Patterson, and John Patterson.
Joseph
and John Black and Daniel Ponder Jr were indeed sons-in-law
of Robert Patterson. Robert Patterson Jr and Peter Patterson
were two sons of Robert "R", and both were the
executors of their father's will. John Patterson was a
grandson of Robert "R" and was named in the
Will, thus the signature.
The
significance of Harald's discoveries were that the reference
to "...what's between Joseph and me" was in
the same sentence as that of Robert's daughter Sarah,
and therefore Robert was referring to his son-in-law Joseph
Black, not a Joseph Patterson. We know for a fact that
Joseph Black DID have land
on Clark's Fork of Bullocks Creek that was very close
to Robert Patterson. Given the fact that Sarah was one
of the older daughters, in fact, the oldest living in
1775, she must have been born in the 1740's. Conceivably,
she may have even been one of the "children"
mentioned by her grandmother Margaret Adams in 1744 in
her Will. Nonetheless,
it is safe to state that Sarah was born circa 1740-48,
and most likely in old Augusta Co Va in the Linville Creek
area that is about 8-10 miles west of modern day Harrisonburg,
Va, which is in Rockingham county today.
Joseph
Black was quite certainly a son of Mathew and Mary _____
Black, all of whom lived in the Linville Creek, Augusta
Co Va area near the Pattersons, and also moved to Clark's
Fork of Bullocks Creek in what is now York Co SC. The
Blacks MAY have actually moved a little sooner than the
Pattersons, but that is not known for sure. Mathew and
Mary Black had several children, such as Gowen (Goin,
Gavin, Gawin), Robert, Janet, and possibly a few others,
such as John and Thomas Black who were also recorded on
deeds and land grants in old Mecklenburg Co NC and York
Co SC. Joseph Black was probably the third son in this
family according to most accounts. He seems to have been
born ca. 1735-45.
Joseph
and Sarah Patterson Black were both alive in 1775 when
her father wrote his will. They were already married by
then. This is based on the fact that Robert Patterson
mentioned his two daughters who were still single, namely
Elizabeth and Lydia, both of whom were married very shortly
thereafter to Daniel Ponder, Jr. and John Black, respectively.
It
is unclear how many children Joseph and Sarah had. Joseph
seems to have been an extremely important person to many
of the family, though. The name Joseph Black was passed
down through many of the Black family lines, and also
the Pattersons, apparently. We're not 100% sure yet, but
it is possible that Margaret Black was a daughter of Joseph
and Sarah Patterson Black. "Which Margaret Black",
you say? I mean the one who married John
Patterson (son of Thomas Patterson) about 1788 in
Pendleton District, SC (PD). John and Margaret Black Patterson's
oldest son was named Joseph
B. Patterson. He was born in 1789 in PD. John and
Margaret also had at least two grandsons named Joseph
B. Patterson. One was the of Joseph B. Patterson Sr. and
the other was the son of John Patterson Jr.
Margaret
Black (Patterson) was born ca. 1767. She was recorded
twice in the 1850 Union Co Ga census as 83 years old.
That age fits all other census records for her, too. She
had at least one sister, Susannah Black (Kincaid). Susannah
was born ca. 1763. If Susannah was the oldest child of
Joseph and Sarah Patterson Black, the math would dictate
that Sarah was about 18 years old when Susannah was born,
IF Sarah was born about 1745. We have stated previously
that Sarah was born about 1740-48 and Joseph Black about
1735-45. Therefore, this is entirely possible.
What
this means though is that if Susannah and Margaret were
indeed daughters of Joseph and Sarah, then Margaret Black
and her husband John Patterson would have been 1st cousins.
That is not impossible. Rather, it was not too uncommon
in those days for 1st cousins to marry. We know for a
fact that John and Margaret's daughter Amey
Jane Patterson married her 1st cousin, William D.
Kincaid, who was a son of James and Susannah Black Kincaid.
We owe much of what we know about John and Margaret to
the descendants of Amey Jane. She passed down to her descendants
that the family was from Camden District, York Co SC.
Amey Jane was born in 1793 and lived until 1889! This
also means that she was alive in the 1880 census, which
was the first census to record the birthplace of an individual's
parents. Her record shows that John and Margaret Black
Patterson were both born in SC.
At
this time, I am still unclear where Joseph and Sarah migrated
to, let alone, when they died. Again, not much is known
of any children they may have had. What is "known"
is really only circumstantial evidence at best. The following
is a brief sketch of what is currently believed to represent the
children of Joseph and Sarah Patterson Black:
- Susannah
Black (b. ca. 1763; d.after 1840), m. James Kincaid
- Robert Goin Black (b. ca. 1765/74; c. ca. 1802), m. Isabelle Hardin
- Margaret
Black (b. ca. 1767; d.after 1850), m. John Patterson
- George Black (b. ca. 1770; d. 1850), m. Jane Duncan
- Joseph Black (b. ca. 1775/84; d.?)
- (possibly others, but unknown at this time)
