Davis Family of Moore Co., NC

The Davises are a hard family to research. I hope to include documentation of this line soon. I descend from the Davises of Moore county, NC. They were mainly in the area of Carthage. My grandfather was Troy Lee Davis, who married Lettie Mae Langley. They were my maternal grand parents. Maternal lines that I have a lot of information on are DAVIS, LANGLEY, McGHEE/McGEHEE, JOYNER/JOINER, FULLER, DUKE, BYRD, etc.

Ed Sanders is a recent contact of mine (August, 2004) who has a good amount of information that he has collected over the years. Much of what he has came from James P. Davis, and notes from the Moore County Library's genealogy room. I have been to that room also, and have collected data from the census records, as well, but we most certainly want to give credit where credit is due. Please visit Ed's site at http://www.sandersweb.net/ed/rdavis.html. This particular page is his page devoted to Robert Davis, and the notes which James P. Davis shared regarding Robert Davis.

Robert Davis was my gggg-grandfather. He was born in 1744, but the location is still unknown. One source says Wales, another says NC. Robert died in Moore Co NC in 1828 at the ripe old age of 84. He owned as many as 1,300 acres at one time. The old homeplace still exists there in Moore county, near present-day Robbins, NC. Robbins is northwest of Carthage, the county seat of Moore county. It is possible that an older William Davis of that area was Robert's father, but some have thought him to be an older brother instead. At this time, I do not know what relation he was to Robert. My assumption would be that he was Robert's father, but I cannot prove that.

Robert's son William C. Davis was born circa 1793. He was my ggg-grandfather. Sandra Lunsford recently shared some data that indicates William's wife Phoebe _____ was the "Feby Phillips", illegitimate daughter of William/Willis Phillips of Chatham Co NC. This was due north of Moore county.

William and Phoebe's son William Davis was born ca. 1820. He was my gg-grandfather. He married Clarkey Hilliard.

William and Clarkey's oldest son was my g-grandfather, Wesley Davis. He was born in 1844, also in Moore Co NC. I need to re-scan the picture we have of him, but here is an old copy of his photo. Wesley Davis was married twice. His first wife died young, having born one daughter to their family. Secondly, Wesley married Ruth Barber, who was 30 years his younger. Together, Wesley and Ruth had six children. The fifth child was my grand father, Troy Lee Davis, born in 1909. When Troy was born, his father Wesley was 65 years old! Wesley died two years later, in 1911.

I will add more information as it comes available. I am looking forward to working with Sandra Lunsford and Ed Sanders more on the various lines of my maternal ancestors, namely Davis, Phillips, and Cheek.
