In
mid-February of 2004, I started an E-mail List Service
for those of us who descend from the BLACK
families who migrated through the area of upper west
SC, western NC, north Ga, and eastern TN, specifically
focusing on the time period of the 1700's and 1800's.
Based on the success of the Pattersons of NC genealogy
ListServ, I felt this was a good opportunity for the
same type of endeavor with the BLACKs. If you are interested
in some focused research on the BLACK family, then
follow the link below. As of March 2, 2004 we are already
up to 26 members on this list. It has been well accepted
thus far and I feel it has already been a huge benefit
to me, for certain.
I will attempt to use this web site as a clearing
house for information regarding the BLACK families of
the specified region. Please visit this site from time
to time as I hope to be adding additional pages regarding
these families as time allows. I will be using a system
I've developed called CLAN SCAN in an attempt to track
these various clans of Blacks.
My BLACK ancestors begin with my gggg-grandmother,
Margaret BLACK (PATTERSON) who was born circa (ca.) 1767
in what is now York Co SC. Her family lived on land along
Clark's Fork of Bullocks Creek in a region that was then
considered to be in Mecklenburg Co NC. This is just south
of the modern day state boundary line between North and
South Carolina. Her future husband (and possible first
cousin) John Patterson was also born there, about 1765.
I have not yet conclusively proven the identity
of Margaret's parents, but I believe that I am 75% sure
they were Joseph BLACK and Sarah
PATTERSON (BLACK). If
this was the case, Margaret and John were first cousins,
as Margaret's mother Sarah Patterson was the sister of
John's father, Thomas Patterson. That would also mean
that both Margaret and John were grandchildren of Robert
"R" and Sarah _____ PATTERSON.
It is quite possible that Joseph Black's parents
were Mathew and Mary _____ BLACK. It is known that they
were in old Augusta Co VA near the Pattersons during
the 1740's and 1750's, and then later at Clark's Fork
of Bullocks Creek near the same families during the 1760's
and later.
I will be adding more on these BLACK
families of Clark's Fork as time allows.
